Proxor Ltd & IEEE Computer Society Announce Joint Professional Software Engineering Master Certification

Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and Proxor announced that the Professional Software Engineering Master Certification will be jointly issued by IEEE Computer Society and Proxor.

To obtain the IEEE Software Developer Master Certification, IEEE members (also available to non-members) will need to successfully complete online Cloud exams that evaluate examinees' coding skills and competency in SWEBOK knowledge areas. Exam includes completion of the Proxor Authentic Exam Modules.

Dr. Philip Miller, co-founder of Proxor, stated “I introduced precursors to the Proxor exams in 1980 when I was in charge of Carnegie Mellon’s freshman programming classes. The improvement in programming throughout the student body was breathtaking. Thirty-two years later my CMU group won a World Bank supported contract from the Kenya Information and Communication Technology Authority to create exams that would identify job candidates who were ready to become professional software developers and also indicate those who needed additional preparation. The Proxor Authentic Examinationsᵀᴹ were born. The key is putting the exam taker into the same situation that professionals experience, every day on the job. There is a working program of some size and complexity. There are bugs to fix and features to integrate. There are integrated development environments, static analysis tools and standard documentation. Exam taker solutions are scored on solving the assigned tasks, including the edge cases, and not breaking existing functionality of the base code. The accuracy of the exams in identifying levels of competence is amazing. In the thousands of exams that Proxor has given, only once did a company push back, saying that we indicated a programmer was good when they knew that he was not. I am convinced that the best method to accurately measure an exam taker’s ability to program in a professional environment is to examine their actual performance under the same real life conditions."

IEEE in general and its Computer Society (IEEE CS) in particular is the world’s leading professional society for computer science, software development and related fields. Everybody at Proxor is delighted that both the IEEE CS Professional Software Developer and Master Certifications have integrated Proxor modules and will be available through both IEEE CS and Proxor.

“The IEEE CS Professional and Master Software Developer certifications are the only Software Development certifications that assess both coding competencies and actual knowledge of software development processes. These certification credentials are designed to distinguish professionals who are proficient with their coding skills and who truly understand the elements involved in the process of efficient Software Development” said Dr. John Keppler, IEEE CS Senior Manager, Professional Education and Certification.

IEEE CS & Proxor will also be working together to make these Certifications available throughout Asia as well.
